SILVER IODATE Usage And Synthesis
Chemical PropertiesOff-white powder
UsesAs reagent for determining small quantities of chloride, e.g., in blood: Sendroy, J. Biol. Chem. 120, 335-445 (1937).
General DescriptionOdorless white solid. Sinks in water. Interaction with Tellurium is violent.
Air & Water Reactionsexplosive reaction between SILVER IODATE and several different metal sulfides, hydrides etc., aided by the presence of water [Bretherick 1995, vol. 2, p. 207].
Reactivity ProfileSILVER IODATE reacts explosively with alkali metals [Bretherick 1979 p. 1028]. Intimate mixture of SILVER IODATE with finely divided aluminum, arsenic, copper, carbon, phosphorus, sulfur, hydrides of alkali and alkaline earth-metals; sulfides of antimony, arsenic, copper or zinc; metal cyanides, thiocyanates; or impure magnesium dioxide may react explosively, either spontaneously (especially in the presence of moisture).
Health HazardContact with eyes causes irritation. If continued for a long period, ingestion or inhalation of silver compounds can cause permanent discoloration of the skin (argyria).
Synthesisa. Prepare the following two solutions separately: A clarified aqueous solution of silver nitrate which contains: silver nitrate 0.4 M/L, citric acid (complexing agent) 0.136 M/L; Clarified aqueous solution of potassium iodate, the solution contains: potassium iodate 0.4M/L, citric acid (complexing agent) 0.136M/L, dodecyl sulfonate na (dispersant) 0.04M/L; b. Slowly add the above prepared silver nitrate clarified aqueous solution to potassium iodate clarified aqueous solution dropwise at room temperature and under normal pressure with sufficient stirring at the same time, and obtain the nano-silver iodate precipitation after standing and settling; c. The above nanometer silver iodate precipitation was filtered, washed three times, and dried at a temperature of 80-100C for 1-2.5 hours, i.e., the nanometer silver iodate powder with a particle size of 55-80 nm was obtained.
Purification MethodsWash the iodate with warm dilute HNO3, then H2O and dry it at 100o, or recrystallise it from NH3 solution by adding HNO3, filtering, washing with H2O and drying at 100o.
