| Description | Ixekizumab (Taltz) is a biologic medication used to treat psoriatic arthritis, plaque psoriasis, ankylosing spondylitis, and non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis. Biologic medications are proteins designed by humans that affect the immune system. Ixekizumab blocks the inflammatory protein IL-17A. This improves joint pain and swelling from arthritis and rash in psoriatic conditions. | | Uses | Ixekizumab (LY2439821) is a humanized IgG4 monoclonal antibody that selectively binds and neutralizes interleukin IL-17A (KD<3 pM). Ixekizumab directly blocks IL-17A binding to IL-17RA (IL-17A receptor) but does not bind to other IL-17 family members. Ixekizumab is used for the research of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis[1][2]. | | Indications | Ixekizumab is FDA-indicated for the adult treatment of moderate to severe plaque psoriasis, active psoriatic arthritis, active ankylosing spondylitis, and active non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis with objective signs of inflammation. | | Side effects | Ixekizumab can lower the ability of your immune system to fight infections. If you develop symptoms of an infection while using this medication, you should stop it and contact your rheumatology provider. All patients should be tested for tuberculosis and hepatitis before starting on ixekizumab. The most common side effects are infections, injection site reactions, upper respiratory infections, and lowering of white blood cells called neutropenia. Rare cases of inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis) have been seen. In male cynomolgus monkeys, following IV administration of 1 mg/kg, Ixekizumab is eliminated with a mean half-life of 6.5 days. After SC administration of 1 mg/kg, Ixekizumab reaches an average maximal plasma concentration of 11.1 μg/mL ~72 hours postdose.
