| Application | 2-Piperazine ethanol dihydrochloride can be used as a pharmaceutical synthesis intermediate and an organic synthesis intermediate, mainly in laboratory research and development processes and chemical and pharmaceutical synthesis processes. | | Synthesis | 2-Piperazin-2-yl-ethanol dihydrochloride was prepared as follows: LAH (1M solution in THF, 20.0 mL, 20.0 mmol) was added dropwise to a cooled mixture of ethyl 3-oxo-piperazin-2-ylacetate (2.0 g, 10.74 mmol) in 50 mL of anhydrous THF under N2 with stirring in an ice bath. When the dropwise addition was complete (c. 10 min), the reaction mixture was refluxed for 3.5 h and then cooled in an ice bath. Water (5 mL) was carefully added with stirring. After stirring for 1/2 hour, the mixture was filtered through a porous funnel and the collected salt was washed with hot EtOH. The filtrates were combined, dried by MgSO4, filtered and the solvent was removed in vacuum. The residue was treated with hot CHCl3, filtered and evaporated to remove CHCl3 to give 2-piperazin-2-yl-ethanol dihydrochloride as a light yellow oil. The product was obtained in quantitative yield and continued to be used without further purification. |
