General procedure for the synthesis of methyl α-D-xylofuranoside from methanol and 2-furancarboxylic acid (CAS:532-20-7): D-ribose (500 g, 3.33 mol) was dissolved in 1.5 L of anhydrous methanol containing 0.5% (v/v) hydrochloric acid, and the reaction system was placed in a round-bottomed flask fitted with a drying tube of calcium carbonate, and the reaction was stirred for 48 h at room temperature. Upon completion of the reaction, the pH of the reaction mixture was adjusted to 7 using Dowex (OH type) ion exchange resin to neutralize the acidity. Subsequently, the resin was removed by filtration, the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to remove the solvent, and the resulting residue was dried under vacuum overnight to afford methyl α-D-xylofuranoside (550 g, 98% yield).
