P-cresyl acetate (50.0 g) was dissolved in 500 mL of carbon tetrachloride, and 4.0 g of benzoyl peroxide (BPO) was added, heated to 50 °C and stirred. Subsequently, 71.5 g of N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) (molar ratio of p-cresyl acetate, NBS to BPO was 1:1.2:0.05) was added in three batches and the reaction was kept for 3 hours. After completion of the reaction, filtration was carried out and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting orange-red oil was slowly added dropwise to petroleum ether and stirred to disperse, and the solid then precipitated. The solid was separated by filtration and the filtrate was washed with water. After drying, the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to give 4-bromomethylphenyl acetate (III) in a yield of 68.3 g and 89.2%.
