Step 4: Synthesis of 2,4-dimethoxy-6-methylnicotinonitrile: 2,4-dichloro-6-methylnicotinonitrile (45 g, 240 mmol) was dissolved in methanol (300 ml). Sodium methanol (30% methanol solution, 100 ml, 1680 mmol) was added to this solution and the reaction mixture was subsequently heated to reflux and maintained for 4 hours. After completion of the reaction, it was cooled to room temperature and the reaction mixture was neutralized with acetic acid. The solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure and the residue was treated with deionized water (300 ml) and methyl tert-butyl ether (100 ml). The resulting solid was treated with tetrahydrofuran (300 ml) by co-evaporation to give the final 2,4-dimethoxy-6-methylnicotinonitrile as a dark yellow solid (40 g, 95% yield).
