| Synthesis | Under nitrogen protection, (1-yloxy-pyridin-3-yl)-acetonitrile (10 g, 75 mmol) was suspended in anhydrous dichloromethane and trimethylcyanosilane (10.95 mL, 82 mmol) and dimethylcarbamoyl chloride (7.55 mL, 82 mmol) were added sequentially. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 72 hours and then concentrated. To the concentrated residue was added ethyl acetate (100 mL), the organic phase was washed with 1 M sodium hydroxide solution (150 mL), dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated. The resulting solid was purified by column chromatography (50% ethyl acetate/hexane) to give 7.08 g (66% yield) of 3-(cyanomethyl)-2-cyanopyridine as a yellow solid with a melting point of 48-51 °C; mass spectrum (+) APCI m/z 144 [M + H]+.
