Synthesis1,2,2,6,6-pentamethylpiperidinol was synthesized by reductive methylation reaction using 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinol, paraformaldehyde and formic acid as the raw materials and water as the solvent, and the structure of the product was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) hydrogen spectroscopy, carbon spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy. The results of one-way and orthogonal experiments showed that the molar ratio of raw materials had the greatest influence on the reductive methylation reaction, followed by the reaction temperature and finally the reaction time. The suitable conditions for this reductive methylation reaction were: n (tetramethylpiperidinol): n (paraformaldehyde): n (formic acid) = 1:1.05:1.05, reaction temperature of 80 C, reaction time of 2.5 h, and the solvent water could be applied three times. Under this optimized condition, the average yield of pentamethylpiperidinol was 97.9% and the purity was 99.6%.
