| Chemical Properties | Zirconium sponge is a silvery-grey metal with a lustrous appearance resembling steel. It has a melting point of 1,852 °C, a boiling point of 4,377 °C and a density of 6.49. Zirconium readily absorbs hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen; it has a strong affinity for oxygen, and at 1,000 °C, the dissolution of oxygen in zirconium causes a significant increase in its volume. Zirconium is relatively stable in air; powdered zirconium is highly flammable, and fine zirconium wire can be ignited with a match. At high temperatures, it reacts directly with dissolved oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen.
