GENERAL METHOD: 4'-Methylacetophenone (1 mmol), n-butanol (1.5 mmol), RhCl(CO)(PPh3)2 (2 mol%) and base (2 mmol) were added to dioxane (3 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at 95 °C and the reaction process was monitored by thin layer chromatography (TLC). Upon completion of the reaction, the solution was diafiltrated and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by fast column chromatography on silica gel to give pure 1-p-tolylhexan-1-one.
