4-Chloro-5-bromopyrimidine (9.90 g, 41.2 mmol) was dissolved in methanol (140 mL) and a methanolic solution of 28% sodium methanolate (24 mL, 120 mmol) was slowly added. The reaction mixture was stirred at 60°C for 15 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature, diluted with an appropriate amount of water, and subsequently extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layers were combined, washed with saturated sodium chloride solution, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and filtered to remove the desiccant. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to give 5-bromo-4-methoxypyrimidine (7.72 g, 79% yield) as a light yellow solid.
