Octenidine concentrations of less than1.5 μM (0.94 μg/mL) causes a greater than 99% reduction of tested microbial population within 15 min. Staphylococcus epidermidis is the most susceptible of the test organisms, and E. coli and C. albicans are the least susceptible.
The antimicrobial activity of octenidine hydrochloride (OCT) is maintained when applied to the skin of the hands and feet of cynomolgus monkeys. Aqueous octenidine, at a concentration of 0.2 to 1.6% reduces resident microflora populations from 90 to 99.98%. A significant reduction in plaque score is observed on the buccal tooth surfaces after daily topical application of 1% solutions of octenidine and chlorhexidine for 7 d; octenidine is more effective than chlorhexidine.

以1,10-二氯癸烷和4-(辛基氨基)吡啶为原料,合成N,N'-[1,10-亚癸基二-1(4H)-吡啶-4-亚基]双(1-辛胺)二盐酸盐的一般步骤如下:将6.18 g的4-(辛基氨基)吡啶碱和3.15 g的1,10-二氯癸烷混合,缓慢加热至120℃,反应放热至180℃,期间通过薄层色谱(TLC)监测反应进程。反应完成后,加入25 mL二甲基甲酰胺(DMF),加热使混合物完全溶解。随后,将混合物冷却至0℃以促进晶体析出,过滤收集晶体,并在60℃下减压干燥。通过上述步骤,获得7.3 g的N,N'-[1,10-亚癸基二-1(4H)-吡啶-4-亚基]双(1-辛胺)二盐酸盐,产率为39.0%,熔点为215至217℃。
