Sources of hardness:
Water hardness originally refers to the precipitation of calcium and magnesium salt to soap. Different countries have different definitions to the hardness such as total hardness, carbonate hardness and non-carbonate hardness. Total hardness refers to the total concentration of calcium and magnesium. Carbonate hardness, which is equal to the hardness of calcium and magnesium combined with carbonate and bicarbonate in the water, is a part of the total hardness. Non-carbonate hardness is also a part of the total hardness. When the content of the calcium ion and magnesium ion in the water exceeds the content of carbonate and bicarbonate, the redundant ions will combine with the chloride ions, sulfate radicals and nitrate radicals in the water, then the non-carbonate hardness forms.
The significance of hardness test
The hardness of the water samples such as boiler water etc. is a very important index. Good controlling of the hardness can not only ensure the boiler safe in operation and improve the efficiency of the boiler, but also prolong the durable years of the boiler and save energy.
Principle
This method equals to the standard method that is EDTA-2Na Titration Method (GB5750-2006). The calcium ions and magnesium ions in water samples combine with EDTA-2Na successively to form chelate. On the end point of the titration, the solution presents the color of the indicator.

Operating in accordance with the instructions, users can complete the hardness test independently without specialized training. Five minutes is enough to complete the analysis of one water sample.

Determination results with this method are in accordance with the results with the standard method. It can be used as an alternative method to the standard method.
