Hepcidin-25, also known as LEAP-1 (liver expressed antimicrobial peptide), is independently found in human blood ultrafiltration and urine. This peptide is mainly expressed in the liver and belongs to a new family of small antimicrobial peptides in vertebrates. It contains 8 cysteine residues and exhibits significant antibacterial and antifungal activities. Further research suggests that hepicidin is the main iron regulatory hormone in humans.Hepcidin-25 induces internalization and degradation by binding to iron transporters, thereby blocking cellular iron efflux.
