Alternariol, a mycotoxin, has been shown to inhibit the short action current across transepithelial sodium pumps. This compound has also demonstrated the ability to have acute cytotoxic effects on cells and cause a halt in cell proliferation. At high doses, alternariol has been reported to induce cell growth arrest in G2/M phase. Additional experiments sμggest that alternariol interacts with DNA by intercalation and causes DNA damage.
