BMAP-18 is a biologically active peptide composed of 18 amino acids, and is a truncated form of the antimicrobial peptide BMAP-27. Bovine bone marrow-derived antimicrobial peptide-27 (BMAP-27) belongs to the peptide family Cathelicidin and has rapid bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Escherichia coli. BMAP-27 has cytotoxicity towards human red blood cells and neutrophils, although its concentration is higher than the bactericidal concentration. Compared to its parent BMAP-27, BMAP-18 exhibits higher cell selectivity as it reduces hemolytic activity while retaining antibacterial activity.
