The LGALS4 antibody targets galectin-4. a member of the galectin family of β-galactoside-binding proteins encoded by the LGALS4 gene. Galectin-4 is primarily expressed in gastrointestinal and epithelial tissues, where it plays roles in cell adhesion, proliferation, immune response modulation, and maintenance of barrier integrity. Structurally, it contains two carbohydrate-recognition domains (CRDs) connected by a linker, enabling cross-linking of glycoproteins on cell surfaces or extracellular matrices.

Research using LGALS4 antibodies has highlighted its dual role in disease contexts. In cancer, galectin-4 exhibits tissue-specific behavior, acting as a tumor suppressor in colorectal cancer by promoting apoptosis, while potentially driving metastasis in pancreatic or ovarian cancers through interactions with tumor-associated glycans. It is also implicated in inflammatory bowel diseases (e.g., Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis), where its expression correlates with mucosal inflammation and barrier dysfunction.

LGALS4 antibodies are vital tools for detecting galectin-4 localization and expression via techniques like immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, or immunofluorescence. These studies contribute to understanding its pathological mechanisms and exploring its potential as a diagnostic biomarker or therapeutic target. However, galectin-4's functional complexity necessitates careful interpretation of experimental results, considering its context-dependent roles in health and disease.
