Alpha1adaptin, also known as AP1B1. is a subunit of the adaptor protein complex 1 (AP-1), which plays a critical role in intracellular vesicular trafficking. AP-1 is part of the clathrin-associated adaptor protein family and facilitates the formation of transport vesicles by linking transmembrane cargo proteins to the clathrin coat. The complex is primarily involved in protein sorting between the trans-Golgi network (TGN), endosomes, and the plasma membrane, ensuring proper cellular compartmentalization and membrane recycling. Alpha1adaptin, specifically the AP1B1 isoform, is enriched in polarized epithelial cells, where it directs the basolateral sorting of membrane proteins, a process essential for maintaining cell polarity and function.

Antibodies targeting Alpha1adaptin are widely used as research tools to study AP-1 complex assembly, vesicle trafficking mechanisms, and epithelial cell polarity.
