该抗菌基因位于17号染色体长臂上，是聚集于此的多个趋化因子基因之一。趋化因子作为超家族分泌蛋白，参与免疫调节及炎症反应过程。该超家族根据成熟肽链N端半胱氨酸的排列方式分为四个亚家族。本基因编码的趋化因子属于CC亚家族成员，对嗜酸性粒细胞具有趋化活性（但不包括单核细胞及中性粒细胞）。这种嗜酸性粒细胞特异性趋化因子被认为参与特应性皮炎、过敏性鼻炎、哮喘及寄生虫病等嗜酸性粒细胞相关性炎症疾病。
