白细胞介素4（IL-4）是一种由活化Th2细胞与肥大细胞产生的多效细胞因子，在免疫应答中发挥核心作用。其生物学效应通过结合造血/非造血细胞表面的高亲和力受体复合物介导。在造血细胞中，IL-4信号由140kDa的IL-4Rα亚基（CD124）与70kDa的共同细胞因子受体γ链（γc, CD132）组成的高亲和力受体复合物传递。
白细胞介素4受体（IL-4R），亦称CD124、IL-4Rα或BSF受体，属于I型细胞因子受体。该受体介导Th2型免疫应答、替代性巨噬细胞活化、黏膜免疫、过敏性炎症、肿瘤进展及动脉粥样硬化等病理进程。其可溶形式（sIL-4R）可通过可变剪接或膜结合蛋白酶解产生，能竞争性阻断IL-4介导的细胞增殖及T细胞IL-5上调效应。
IL-4R还可与IL-13Rα1结合形成II型受体，该受体可同时响应IL-4与IL-13信号。经证实，IL-4R可与衔接蛋白SHC1发生相互作用。
