脑源性神经营养因子（BDNF）与神经生长因子（NGF）、神经营养因子3（NT-3）、神经营养因子4/5（NT-4/5）同属神经营养因子家族。这类因子对周围及中枢神经系统各类神经元的发育、存活及功能维持至关重要。神经营养因子通过两类细胞表面受体发挥作用：低亲和力P75受体与高亲和力酪氨酸激酶受体Trk家族。其中，NGF主要结合TrkA；BDNF及NT4/5特异性结合TrkB；NT-3则以TrkC为主要结合靶点（亦可较弱结合TrkA）。
