The protein has a calculated MW of 30.0 kDa. The protein migrates as 34-45 kDa under reducing (R) condition (SDS-PAGE) due to glycosylation.

上皮细胞黏附分子（EpCAM）亦称CO171A、EGP、EGP40、GA7332、KSA、M4S1、MIC18、MK1、TROP1、hEGP2，是一种泛上皮分化抗原，可作为17-1A（单克隆抗体）抗原在几乎所有上皮源性癌组织中表达。其生理功能正在被逐步阐明：该分子与钙黏蛋白-连环蛋白通路存在复杂关联，进而影响负责细胞内信号传导与极性建立的核心WNT通路。研究显示，上皮细胞黏附分子（Ep-CAM）在大多数上皮源性恶性肿瘤中均有表达，已被确认为肿瘤标志物及分子靶向治疗的候选靶点。
有研究表明，Ep-CAM与N-钙黏蛋白通过Pi3K介导交叉信号传导，这一过程会导致上皮细胞中钙黏蛋白黏附复合物的功能丧失。近年来，上皮细胞黏附分子（Ep-CAM）作为乳腺癌预后评估因子受到越来越多关注。
