人促红细胞生成素（EPO），亦称EP，是一种调控红细胞生成（即红细胞产生）的糖蛋白激素。作为骨髓中红细胞前体细胞的细胞因子，EPO在成年人体内主要由肾小管周围细胞合成，肝脏亦有少量生成。其调控机制被认为依赖于监测血氧水平的反馈系统：在氧气存在时，组成型合成的EPO转录因子——缺氧诱导因子（HIFs）会发生羟化并经蛋白酶体降解。EPO与红细胞表面的促红细胞生成素受体（EpoR）结合后，可激活JAK2信号级联通路。该激素主要通过保护红细胞免于凋亡来促进其存活，同时与多种参与红系前体细胞发育的生长因子协同作用。EPO还具有多种生理效应，包括通过血管收缩作用引发高血压、刺激血管生成及诱导平滑肌纤维增殖。研究还表明，EPO可通过抑制铁调素来增强铁吸收。其在体内的作用机制已被证实通过与促红细胞生成素受体相互作用实现。此外，EPO在大脑应对神经元损伤的过程中发挥重要作用，并参与伤口愈合过程。
