Balstilimab is a fully human monoclonal antibody designed as an immune checkpoint inhibitor. It specifically targets the programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) receptor, blocking its interaction with its ligands PD-L1 and PD-L2. By binding to PD-1 on T cells, it prevents the inhibitory “off” signal, thereby reinvigorating the anti-tumor immune response. It was primarily investigated in clinical trials, both as a monotherapy and in combination with other agents, for the treatment of advanced cervical cancer and other solid tumors.
