Obiltoxaximab (brand name Anthim®) is a chimeric (mouse/human) monoclonal antibody that specifically targets the protective antigen (PA) component of Bacillus anthracis toxin. It functions as a neutralizing antibody by binding to PA and preventing its interaction with cellular receptors, thereby blocking the assembly of the toxic complex (PA + lethal factor/edema factor) and subsequent cellular uptake. It does not directly kill the bacteria but neutralizes the key toxin responsible for anthrax pathogenesis. It is approved (under the FDA Animal Rule) for the treatment and prophylaxis of inhalational anthrax in combination with appropriate antibiotics, and for use when alternative therapies are not available or appropriate.
