Foravirumab (also known as CR-4098) is an investigational human monoclonal antibody developed for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) of rabies. It functions as a neutralizing antibody against the rabies virus. Designed to be part of a modern rabies prophylaxis regimen, foravirumab is administered in combination with rabies vaccine and potentially other antibodies after a high-risk exposure (e.g., bite from a rabid animal). It works by binding with high affinity to the rabies virus glycoprotein (G protein) on the surface of the virus, thereby neutralizing the virus and preventing it from entering peripheral neurons and initiating the fatal neurological infection.
