Lactulose is synthesized nonabsorbable disaccharide. Lactulose also has the osmotic activity of disaccharide, making water and electrolytes retained in the intestinal cavity to produce hypertonic effects. Therefore, it's also a kind of osmotic laxative. Without intestinal irritation, it can also be used to treat chronic functional constipation.
