腮腺炎病毒的两种表面糖蛋白是血凝素-神经氨酸酶（HN）和融合蛋白（F）。这些糖蛋白对于病毒进入宿主细胞以及新生病毒粒子的传播至关重要。腮腺炎融合蛋白（F）是一种由538个氨基酸组成的I类融合表面糖蛋白，负责介导病毒与宿主细胞的膜融合。未切割的F蛋白含有三个疏水区：一个氨基端信号肽、F1的氨基端区域以及羧基端的跨膜结构域。该蛋白以前体分子（F0）形式合成，随后通过宿主内切蛋白酶（弗林蛋白酶）识别R-X-L/R-R基序而切割成具有活性的蛋白。F蛋白包含两个由二硫键连接的多肽链（F1和F2）。
