Furosemide, also known as furosemide, is a potent aminosulfonyl diuretic that acts on the medullary portion of the ascending limb of the loop of Henle. It has a strong but short-lived diuretic effect, increasing the excretion of water, sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphate. Clinically, it is used to treat cardiac edema, renal edema, ascites due to cirrhosis, and peripheral edema caused by functional or vascular disorders. It can also promote the excretion of upper urinary tract stones. Intravenous administration can treat cerebral edema and accelerate the excretion of toxins in cases of drug poisoning in cerebral edema. It is important to note that while furosemide promotes diuresis, the excretion of Cl-, Na+, K+, and H+ in urine does not increase the excretion of HCO3-. Long-term, repeated, or high-dose use can lead to hyponatremia, hypochloremic hypokalemic alkalosis.
