NFF-3 is a useful fluorescent peptide substrate for MMP-3 (matrix metalloproteinase-3/stromelysin-1), containing a sequence of 10 amino acids. NFF-3 is rapidly hydrolyzed by MMP-3 (kcat/Km = 218,000 s-1 M-1) and very slowly by MMP-9 (kcat/Km = 10,100 s-1 M-1), but not significantly by MMP-1 or MMP-2.
