Homotaurine (3-amino-1-propanesulfonic acid or tramiprosate (inn)) is a kind of sulfamic acid isolated from centipede hyoid (Grateloupia livda). It is similar to taurine, but has one more methylene than taurine. It was found that taurine could slow down memory decline and cognitive decline. Because of the low molecular weight of high taurine, it can pass through the blood-brain barrier, thus reducing the toxicity of β - amyloid protein. By imitating the ionic properties of glycosaminoglycan (GAG), high taurine binds to β - amyloid protein, thus resisting the abnormal deposition of amyloid protein and protecting the fiber from amyloid protein hydrolysis. In clinical trials, the researchers found that the high taurine group retained about 68% more brain capacity than the control group, preventing the memory and cognitive decline caused by amyloid.
