What are the benefits of chitosan as a dietary supplement for humans?
Apr 7,2026
Chitosan (CS) is a biodegradable and non-toxic natural polymer with lipid-lowering and antibacterial properties, as well as good biocompatibility; it is widely used in the food and biomedical industries. When used as a dietary supplement, CS and its derivatives can lower blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels. This is due to their ability to bind to dietary fats, thereby reducing their absorption in the gut. Furthermore, it is believed to aid wound healing, enhance immune responses and possess anti-tumour activity; however, these effects have not yet been validated through clinical trials.
