Hexachlorodiphenyloxide Usage And Synthesis
DescriptionChlorinated diphenyl oxide is a white oryellowish waxy solid or very viscous liquid. Molecularweight=376.88; Boiling point=230-260℃at 8 mmHg;361.2 ℃at 760 mmHg; Vapor pressure=4.37 25 mmHg at25℃; Flash point=123℃.
Hexachloro Diphenyl Oxide: Autoignitiontemperature=620℃. Hazard Identification (based onNFPA 704 M Rating System): Health 2, Flammability 1,Reactivity 0.
Chemical PropertiesChlorinated diphenyl oxide is a white or yellowish waxy solid or very viscous liquid.
Chemical PropertiesLight-yellow, very viscous liquid. Soluble in methanol and ether; very slightly soluble in water. Nonflammable.
UsesSolvent, intermediate.
HazardToxic by ingestion.
Safety ProfileModerately toxic by ingestion and probably by inhalation. Combustible when exposed to heat, flame, or oxidizing materials. To fight fire, use water spray, fog, foam, dry chemical, CO2. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of Cl-. See also ETHERS and ALDRIN (a closely related compound).
Potential ExposureThese materials are used as dielectric fluids in the electrical industry; they may be used as organic intermediates to make drugs and other chemicals; and in dry cleaning detergents. Used in the manufacture of flame-inhibiting polymers, as corrosion inhibitors, drycleaning detergents, thermal lubricants, additives for soaps and lotions, and in the manufacture of hydraulic fluids, pesticides, wood preservatives, and electric insulators.
First aidIf this chemical gets into the eyes, remove anycontact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least15 min, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention immediately. If this chemical contacts theskin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediatelywith soap and water. Seek medical attention immediately. Ifthis chemical has been inhaled, remove from exposure, begin rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including resuscitation mask) if breathing has stopped and CPR ifheart action has stopped. Transfer promptly to a medicalfacility. When this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and inducevomiting. Do not make an unconscious person vomit.
storageColor Code—Green: General storage may be used.Prior to working with chlorinated diphenyl oxides youshould be trained on its proper handling and storage. Storein tightly closed containers in a cool, well-ventilated area.Metal containers involving the transfer of this chemicalshould be grounded and bonded. Where possible, automatically pump liquid from drums or other storage containers toprocess containers. Drums must be equipped with self-closing valves, pressure vacuum bungs, and flame arresters. Useonly nonsparking tools and equipment, especially whenopening and closing containers of this chemical. Sources ofignition, such as smoking and open flames, are prohibitedwhere this chemical is used, handled, or stored in a mannerthat could create a potential fire or explosion hazard.
ShippingUN3082 Environmentally hazardous substances, liquid, n.o.s., Hazard class: 9; Labels: 9-Miscellaneous hazardous material, Technical Name Required. UN3077 Environmentally hazardous substances, solid, n.o.s., Hazard class: 9; Labels: 9-Miscellaneous hazardous material, Technical Name Required.
IncompatibilitiesIncompatible with oxidizers (chlorates, nitrates, peroxides, permanganates, perchlorates, chlorine, bromine, fluorine, etc.); contact may cause fires or explosions. Keep away from alkaline materials, strong bases, strong acids, oxoacids, epoxides. May be able to form unstable peroxides. Reacts with aluminum.
Waste DisposalFor trichloro phenyl ether, solution in a flammable solvent and incineration in a furnace with afterburner and scrubber is recommended.
