General method: 2-Iodoanisole (1.0 eq.) and ethyl difluorobromoacetate (1.0 eq.) were sequentially added to a suspension of activated copper powder (2.6 eq.) in DMSO (0.38 M) under nitrogen atmosphere. The reaction mixture was stirred at 60 °C for 12 hours. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was filtered through a Celite pad and washed with ether. The organic phase was washed sequentially with water, saturated ammonium chloride solution (2 times) and brine (2 times), followed by drying with anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The desiccant was removed by filtration and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude product was purified by silica gel column chromatography to afford the target product ethyl 2,2-difluoro-2-(2-methoxyphenyl)acetate.
