Janus Green B belongs to the phenazine group of dyes. It is a dark green/dark brown/dark black powder. Janus Green B should be oxidized to become colored. Thusthis dye can be used to specifically stain mitochondria in living cells. It has been used to stain biomoleculesnucleic acids and chromosomes. In additionit is also used to stain various living organisms including fungiyeast cellbrainspinal cordsperms and tissue culture monolayer. Janus Green B acts as an antimalarial agent. The dye dissolves in H2O to give a bluish violet solution which becomes colourless when made 10M in NaOH. It dissolves in EtOH to give a blue-violet colour, filter from insoluble material, then add dry Et2O whereby the dye separates out leaving a small amount of blue colour in solution.
