A solution of 40% formaldehyde (45.0 g, 0.60 mol) and potassium carbonate (2.00 g, 14.5 mmol) in water (70 mL) was added to a solution of benzamide (70.0 g, 0.58 mol). The solution was heated in a water bath until a clear solution was formed, and then crystallized. Recrystallization with dilute ethanol gave N-hydroxymethylbenzamide 6282-02-6 (79.4 g, 85%) as a crystalline solid, mp 104 °C.
