Hazard Information | Back Directory | [Description]
Ethyl gallate is a food additive with E number E313. It is the ethyl ester of gallic acid. Ethyl gallate is added to food as an antioxidant. Though found naturally in a variety of plant sources including walnuts Terminalia myriocarpa or chebulic myrobolan (Terminalia chebula). Ethyl gallate is produced from gallic acid and ethanol. It can be found in wine. | [Chemical Properties]
white to slightly beige fine powder | [Definition]
ChEBI: A gallate ester obtained by the formal condensation of gallic acid with ethanol. | [General Description]
This substance is a primary reference substance with assigned absolute purity (considering chromatographic purity, water, residual solvents, inorganic impurities). The exact value can be found on the certificate. Produced by PhytoLab GmbH & Co. KG | [Synthesis]
1. 100 g of gallic acid and 150 g of ethanol were added to the reactor. 2. 35 g of bromine-modified sulfonic acid resin (prepared as in Example 2) was added. 3. The reaction mixture was heated to 80°C for 5 hours. 4. After completion of the reaction, the filtrate and the bromine-modified sulfonic acid resin were separated by filtration. 5. The filtrate was distilled to remove excess ethanol to obtain the crude product. 6. The crude product was recrystallized using deionized water. 7. The recrystallized product was dehydrated and dried. 8. Ethyl gallate was obtained in 98% yield and 99% purity. 9. The crude product was recrystallized using deionized water. 7. The recrystallized product was dehydrated and dried. 8. Ethyl gallate was obtained with a yield of 98% and a purity of 99.9%. 9. | [storage]
Store at -20°C | [Purification Methods]
Recrystallise the gallate from 1,2-dichloroethane, UV: max (neutral species) 275nm ( 10 000), (anion) 235nm ( 10 300), 279nm ( 11 400) and 324nm ( 8 500) [Campbell & Coppinger J Am Chem Soc 73 2708 1951]. [Beilstein 10 IV 2002.] | [References]
