General procedure for the synthesis of 4-(4-chlorophenyl)cyclohexane-1-carboxylic acid from methyl 4-(4-chlorophenyl)cyclohexane-1-carboxylate: 4-(4-chlorophenyl)cyclohexane-1-carboxylic acid methyl ester (10.08 g, 0.04 mol) was added to a 250 mL triple-necked vial, followed by methanol (80 mL) and water (20 mL). Lithium hydroxide (3.60 g, 0.15 mol) was added to the reaction mixture and the reaction was stirred at room temperature for 5 hours. After the reaction was completed, the pH of the reaction solution was adjusted to 1 with 1 N hydrochloric acid and stirring was continued for 30 minutes. The precipitated solid was collected by filtration and the filter cake was washed with water to pH 5 to obtain the crude product. The crude product was dissolved in 60 mL of ethanol and recrystallized, resulting in 8.50 g of white solid product with 89% yield and 99.17% purity. | [References]
