The gene LMX1A (LIM homeobox transcription factor 1 α) is mapped to human chromosome 1q23.3. It is a paralogue of Lhx (LIM homeobox family) proteins.
Biochem/physiol Actions
LMX1A (LIM homeobox transcription factor 1 α) is a transcription factor which is required for the development of dopaminergic neurons. It plays an important role in the dopaminergic pathway and is associated with schizophrenia and altered cognitive functioning. Mutation in the gene is also associated with risk of Parkinson′s disease. LMX1A gene is upregulated in advanced stages of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. It is hypermethylated in squamous cell carcinoma and is a suppressor of metastasis in cervical cancer.
