Biphenyl-4-carboxylic acid is employed in the synthesis, characterization of europium, terbium complexes.

Experimental reproductive effects. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating vapors.
Synthesis
Under argon protection, 2.75 g (13.8 mmol) of 4-bromobenzoic acid, 2 g (16.4 mmol) of phenylboronic acid, 32.71 g (27.3 mmol) of K2CO, and 0.2 g of palladium tetrakis(triphenylphosphine) were added to 40 mL of dioxyhexahydroxane solvent/water (10:1), and heated up to 75 C, and the reaction was completely monitored by TLC after 5h. The reaction solution was cooled, filtered, adjusted PH to 2-3, a large amount of white solid was generated, filtered to obtain a white solid 4-biphenylcarboxylic acid 2.30 g, yield 84.9%.

Crystallise the acid from *C6H6/pet ether or aqueous EtOH. [Beilstein 9 IV 2479.]
