Description
Dimethrin is a pyrethroid ester insecticide mainly used for public health applications. It is largely considered obsolete. It has a low aqueous solubility, low volatility and not considered to be highly mobile. It is toxic to fish. Dimethrin is not particularly toxic to mammals via the oral route and is a recognised irritant.
Uses
Dimethrin is a pesticide, a pyrethroid insecticide. An acaricide for agricultural purposes.
Production Methods
Dimethrin is commercially produced through esterification of 2,2-dimethyl-3-(2-methylprop-1-enyl)cyclopropanecarboxylic acid with 2,4-dimethylbenzyl alcohol. This reaction forms the active ester compound that mimics natural pyrethrins, offering insecticidal properties with improved stability. The synthesis is typically carried out under mild conditions using acid catalysts or coupling agents in organic solvents, followed by purification through distillation or crystallisation.
