Production Methods
Phenkapton is commercially synthesised by esterifying 2,4-dichlorophenol with O,O-dimethyl phosphorodithioic acid chloride. The production process begins with 2,4-dichlorophenol, which is reacted with O,O-dimethyl phosphorodithioic acid chloride under controlled conditions to form the active compound: O,O-dimethyl O-(2,4-dichlorophenyl) phosphorodithioate. This esterification typically occurs in an organic solvent like toluene or xylene, with a base such as pyridine to neutralise the hydrochloric acid by-product.
Mechanism of action
Acetylcholinesterase (AchE) inhibitor.
Safety Profile
Poison by ingestion. Moderately toxic by skin contact. A cholinesterase inhibitor. When heated to decomposition it emits very toxic fumes of Cl-, POx, and SOx. See also PARATHION
