Dimethenamid Chemical Properties, Uses, Production
Description
Dimethanamid is a soil-applied herbicide. It is highly soluble in water and has a low volatility. It is not expected to be persistent in soil systems but may be persistent in water depending on local conditions. It is moderately toxic to most fauna and flora for which data is available. Dimethenamid is also moderately toxic to mammals if ingested and is a skin irritant and skin sensitizer.
Uses
Preemergence herbicide for use in food crops.
Production Methods
The commercial production of dimethenamid begins with the reaction of 2,4-dimethylthiophene-3-amine with 2-methoxy-1-methylethylamine, followed by acylation with chloroacetyl chloride in an organic solvent under controlled temperature and pH to ensure high yield and purity. The crude dimethenamid is purified through filtration and recrystallisation to remove impurities.

It is a member of thiophenes, an aromatic amide, an ether and an organochlorine compound.
