Production Methods

Bromochlorodimethylhydantoin is commercially produced by halogenating dimethylhydantoin with elemental bromine and chlorine. The synthesis begins with 5,5-dimethylhydantoin, which undergoes sequential halogenation using bromine and chlorine under controlled temperature and pH conditions. This process introduces bromine and chlorine atoms at the nitrogen positions of the imidazolidine-2,4-dione ring, forming 1-bromo-3-chloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin. The reaction is typically carried out in aqueous or organic solvents with agitation to ensure uniform halogenation.
