Chemical Properties
Zirconium sponge is a silvery-grey metal with a lustrous appearance resembling steel. It has a melting point of 1,852 °C, a boiling point of 4,377 °C and a density of 6.49. Zirconium readily absorbs hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen; it has a strong affinity for oxygen, and at 1,000 °C, the dissolution of oxygen in zirconium causes a significant increase in its volume. Zirconium is relatively stable in air; powdered zirconium is highly flammable, and fine zirconium wire can be ignited with a match. At high temperatures, it reacts directly with dissolved oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen.
Uses
Zirconium sponge, also known as metallic zirconium, is a reactive metal that forms an oxide film at room temperature, giving it exceptional corrosion resistance; zirconium possesses extremely high hardness and strength, as well as good mechanical and thermal conductivity properties, and exhibits excellent luminescent characteristics; metallic zirconium has a low thermal neutron absorption cross-section, which gives it outstanding nuclear properties; Zirconium readily absorbs hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen; it has a strong affinity for oxygen, and at 1000°C, the dissolution of oxygen in zirconium causes a significant increase in its volume; zirconium is relatively stable in air, but zirconium powder is highly combustible; fine zirconium wire can be ignited with a match, and at high temperatures, it can react directly with dissolved oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen. Zirconium readily emits electrons at high temperatures.
