Furathiocarb Chemical Properties, Uses, Production
Description
Furathiocarb, butyl 2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethylbenzofuranyl N,N -dimethyl-N,N -thiodicarbamate
(IUPAC), is a yellow viscous liquid, which is sparingly soluble in water
and is readily miscible with most organic solvents.
Furathiocarb is obtained by reaction of N-n-butylmethylcarbamate
with sulfenyl chloride, followed by treatment
of the product with 2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-
benzofuranyl N-methylcarbamate. Furathiocarb is applied
as a foliar, soil, or seed treatment.
Definition
ChEBI: Furathiocarb is a carbamate ester and a member of 1-benzofurans. It has a role as an EC 3.1.1.7 (acetylcholinesterase) inhibitor, a carbamate insecticide and an agrochemical.
Production Methods
Furathiocarb is commercially produced through a multi-step synthesis involving carbamate formation and aromatic substitution. Producton begins with the synthesis of carbofuran, which serves as a key intermediate. Carbofuran is prepared by reacting 2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethylbenzofuran-7-ol with methyl isocyanate to form the methylcarbamate structure. This intermediate is then alkylated with N-methyl-N-phenylthiourea under controlled conditions to introduce the thiocarbamate moiety, yielding furathiocarb.
