VANADIUM (III) OXIDE Usage And Synthesis
Chemical PropertiesBlack crystals. Soluble in alkalies and hydrogen fluoride; slightly soluble in water.
UsesCatalyst, e.g., when making ethanol from ethylene.
UsesVanadium(III) oxide catalyzes the direct fluorination reactions. It is used in the coating of carbon nanotubes and as an electrode in lithium ion batteries.
Air & Water ReactionsVANADIUM (III) OXIDE undergoes slow air oxidation at room temperature [Kirk-Othmer]. VANADIUM (III) OXIDE does ignite upon heating in air. Slightly soluble in water.
Reactivity ProfileVANADIUM (III) OXIDE is basic. Reacts rapidly with chlorine. soluble in alkalis and in hydrofluoric acid.
Flammability and ExplosibilityNon flammable
reaction suitabilityreagent type: catalyst
core: vanadium
Safety ProfilePoison by ingestion, subcutaneous, and intratracheal routes. Igmtes when heated in air. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of VOx. See also VANADIUM COMPOUNDS.
