The most common preparation method for SodiuM bis(trifluoroMethylsulfonyl)iMide is the reaction of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH) with metallic sodium or organic amines.

Chemical PropertiesSodium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, a white to light yellow solid, is highly chemically and thermally stable. It is readily soluble in organic solvents such as acetonitrile and dimethyl sulfoxide, but virtually insoluble in water. This property makes it an ideal reagent in organic synthesis because it disperses and reacts well in organic solvents.
UsesSodium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide is used as an electrolyte in batteries and fuel cells. It also finds use as an ionic liquid and Lewis acid.
