General procedure for the synthesis of 2,4,6-tris(3-bromophenyl)-1,3,5-triazine from 3-bromobenzonitrile: 3-bromobenzonitrile (7.80 g, 42.9 mmol) was placed in a 50 mL two-necked flask. After displacing the air in the flask with nitrogen, the flask was cooled in an ice bath. Trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (3.47 mL, 42.9 mmol) was slowly added dropwise through a dropping funnel to 3-bromobenzonitrile in the flask. The reaction mixture was slowly warmed from 0 °C to room temperature under nitrogen protection and stirred continuously for 20 h at room temperature. Upon completion of the reaction, the resulting solid product was added to 100 mL of 28% ammonia solution and stirred, and the solid color was observed to change from yellow to white. The solid was separated by diafiltration and washed sequentially with water and methanol. The washed solid was transferred to 200 mL of methanol and sonicated. After ultrasonication, the solid was again recovered by filtration withdrawal, and the final white powdery product 2,4,6-tris(3-bromophenyl)-1,3,5-triazine (7.78 g, 99.6% yield) was obtained.
