The temperature of the reaction system was raised to 50 °C. The reaction flask was then charged to the reaction flask. 100 g of 2-methyl-2-pentenenitrile was slowly added dropwise over a period of 5 hours, and the temperature was lowered to 50 °C after completion of the dropwise addition. To the reaction mixture was added 150 g of water followed by extraction with 300 g of toluene in three portions (100 g each). The organic phases were combined and purified by distillation.
